In addition to Christmas stockings, I decided to make up this extra long (62″) table runner for a friend with a penchant for long runners and birds. This was one of my 60 degree ruler projects.
There was no applique involved, but I wanted it to have custom look, so I focused on fussy cutting the birds to show them off well in the diamonds. l also used two different metallic threads to highlight the strips added on top of the red sections.
Using leftover stash, I tried to get the most mileage out of the fabric.
Using Monopoly, I channel quilted the fussy cut bird half triangles.
I used bias strips to add texture and interest. Variegated silver on the red and white strip in a deco stitch. Varigated red/white/green on the holly print.
The red strips were quilted with free hand feathers. Deco stitching silver metallic highlighted the deep green strips that are flecked with silver.
I love these little cardinals! I have now used up all this leftover cardinal + birches fabric and miss it already.
The center 60 degree diamond is the chickadee and is quilted with a silver variegated metallic thread in a cross stitch and framed with the deco stitching in the same thread. I also used Monopoly to stitch around the chickadee.
Another cardinal! The binding is stitched in a blanket stitch using a red/white/green variegated thread which is also used in a wave pattern on the dark green holly fabrics. Small swirls help the bird trees to stand out.
I made a nice bag for the runner. Good for storing and gift giving!
