Its time for my annual “here are photos from garden” blog. Why? Well, garden work cuts into sewing time but mostly because flowers are an inspiration to intrepid quilters and applique addicts everywhere.
They constantly inspire me to dig into my stach and create something beautiful and also to expand my color choices and dare to be as colorful as they are.
I live in the US in western Washington State. Our climate is moderate, with plenty of rain, which makes growing fabulous flowers a gardener’s dream.
In general order of appearance through the season…
Camelia! A very early bloomer, think late February through March. Some are solid pink, but most are abundantly a mixture of pinks with a touch of white.Tulips! Cherry blossoms, like little tutus. They are here all the month of April.
Rhodendron is our state flower and they are prominent throughout the Pacific Northwest. Early varieties bloom in late March and then other bloom through late May.
Out earliest blooming Rhododendron. The color gives me goosebumps! An old variety of Rhododendron…starts out pinkish and then turns the color of thick cream.Rhododenron…amazing colors.Another fabulous Rhododendron! This one is about 10’ tall!Wine and Roses Rhodoendron. Love the trumpet shape. the backs of the leaves are red.Mini Rhododenron.Another mini Rhodie. These usually grow to about 2’. Foxglove! Heat tolerant, drought tolerant, grows almost anywhere!Lupine and Viola (foxglove in the background)Dutch Iris, another heat and drought species. Plant them in the dryest spot and they will persevere and multiply!A vintage climbing rose. The climbing rose! And old variety of Rose that smells heavenly!A second vintage climbing rose. These blooms get up to 7” across when fully open.White, so very white Hibiscus. They are blooming now and will go for a couple months. The first Dahlia of the year! There will be more blooming through the whole summer into September.Lavender! I have about 7 in various area of the yard. I harvest some of the blooms for sachets each year. A couple of my lavenders are over 10 yrs old.
