Vintage Lace Layer Cake, Part 2

Remember two months ago when hubby picked out a layer cake at the fabric store?

Island Batik Vintage Lace layer cake.
I separated the squares into dark to light gradations. And then used the dark to medium on a lap quilt.
And I still have coordinating yardage left!
Sandra and I decided to do this MSQ pattern as a quick challenge.
I am using the pastel to medium tones left from the layer cake for this pattern. White on ecru layer cake squares in my stash are being used for the white/background areas.
Flying geese!
Of course, there will be birds…

And more birds…

The pattern does not have an applique pattern; it suggests fussy cutting a flower or other motif to use an an applique. I decided to use some of my birds, rocks and flowers and to construct a simple tree.

Cross stitch background for the humming bird.
Outline and McTavish for the final two picture squares.
My completed project.

I am using the coordinating yardage for the backing and for the binding. And using the same pastel, pearlized variegated thread that I used for the earlier project. I did feather medallions in four of the squares, with a simple straight stitch starburst in the other two.

Sandra’s completed project. She used bright batiks and made machine embroidery butterflies for her version of this quilt.
Vintage Lace layer cake, part 1 – Remember?

This wraps the story of the Vintage Lace layer cake. I have a few odd squares left. It was fun to make to very different projects using the one layer cake stack and then to extend the fun by doing a challenge project with Sandra!

Happy quilting! Lennea
